A God Who Is Above All

There is a beautiful song called ‘Above All’. Many of us can readily agree with what the verses say about God’s supremacy over all things:

Above all powers, above all kings
Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were here before the world began

Above all kingdoms, above all thrones
Above all wonders the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasures of the earth
There’s no way to measure what you’re worth

But then comes the chorus… And some of us cannot comprehend how it could posibly be true:

Crucified
Laid behind a stone
You lived to die
Rejected and alone
Like a rose
Trampled on the ground
You took the fall
And thought of me
Above all

There are some people who feel that God is so perfect, great and beyond creation, that He cannot interact with our imperfect world. How could a God who is ‘above all’  ever have anything to do with ‘all’?

That is to say, God would never take the form of a lowly man. God would never give up His son (or even a righteous prophet) to pay for our dirty sins. God would not directly speak to us, care for us or comfort us.

They believe that God would never do the above… Because God is above all things.

But I reach the exactly opposite conclusion. I feel that BECAUSE God is so perfect, great and beyond creation, He willingly chooses to interact with our imperfect world.
God took the form of the man in Jesus Christ. God gave His most precious Son to pay for our sins. God longs to speak with us, to care for us and comfort us.

All these things, God is willing to do… Precisely BECAUSE He is above all things!

After all, what kind of God is more awesome – One who is distant and does not associate with sinful mankind? Or one who is personal and Himself rescues us from our self-destruction?

What kind of God is more worthy of our worship – One who simply IS great? Or one who IS great and DOES things so great that the boggle the measly human imagination?

What kind of God is more perfect in love – One who cannot care about us because we don’t deserve His compassion? Or one who can still love us despite all our imperfections, sinfulness and evil ways?

What kind of God is more beyond our limits and understanding – One who cannot contaminate Himself with His own creation? Or one who defies our expectations and ideas of how He should behave?

(Or put it a down to earth wy: Would it be more incredible if the greatest human Prime Minister/President/King didn’t waste his time with petty matters? Or if he stopped to personally put a band-aid on a common street kid who fell and grazed his knees?)

This is the PERFECT God of the Bible! Not a God of some petty, legalistic definition of ‘perfection’… But one who is perfect in a very REAL way!

Who are we anyway, to dictate what God should/must/can or shouldn’t/mustn’t/cannot do? It is God who acts according to His will, and it is we who accept it. “I AM WHO I AM,” says the LORD!

And so I feel that BECAUSE God is so great and Almighty, so beyond our comprehension, so Incredible-King-of-the-Universe… That is exactly why He could do something so utterly unbelievable as to DEARLY LOVE each and every one of us!

Because He is above all… That is why He thought of us, above all else.
