NST Letters: School discipline

I sent a letter to the NST that got printed while I was away in Sarawak.  It was orginialy titled ‘Who is the real classroom tyrant?’. They kept almost all of it, except for a last paragraph that I include at the bottom for your viewing:

———-

From NST 14 Mac 2007 (NST removes links after about a week):

SchoolDiscipline1

SchoolDiscipline2

My last paragraph that was removed:

“Spare the rod and spoil the child…” Indeed, schools today seem to have far more discipline problems than when the schoolmasters of old held canes! Though some teachers may have been tyrants, the majority were beloved by their students, who later in life were grateful for the disciplining. And it is definitely better than having a whole class full of ‘little tyrants’!
