It seems the suspect, Shahabdeen Haq SK Mohammed Ariff, was a member of the Sagol gang which was supposedly crippled back in 2003. He had previously been detained in relation to another gang rape case, but was released due to ‘insufficient evidence’.
Insufficient evidence… Come on, how much semen and hair do you need to recover from the victim to get a DNA match? The infamous Malaysian inefficiency, or the infamous Malaysian police indifference?
I will state it again – serial rape offenders should be PHYSICALLY CASTRATED to guarantee no further offenses. After all, you don’t let someone convicted of a shooting murder buy guns again, do you?
UPDATE: 14 have been arrested in connection with this and other cases.

Police name suspect in robbery-cum-rape case
JOHOR BARU, Fri:
Police have identified one of the suspects in the robbery-cum-rape of a 19-year-old woman and the robbery and assault of her boyfriend in Gelang Patah on Monday.
A police dragnet has been launched for Shahabdeen Haq SK Mohammed Ariff, a member of the Sagol gang which had been crippled in 2003.
He had been released by police as they lacked sufficient evidence.
The gang had also been involved in other robbery-cum-rape cases in the state, carrying out at least three such crimes.
State CID chief SAC II Roslan Ahmad released Shahabdeen’s picture to the media yesterday.
Police also launched an inquiry into allegations by the victims that a police patrol team had failed to act when the brother of one of them informed the policemen that the couple was being attacked.”If the allegations are true, we will take immediate action. This could include termination from the force for the policemen involved,” he said.In the incident on Monday night, the woman and her 22-year-old boyfriend were travelling from Pontian to here when four men in a Toyota Altis rammed into their Proton Iswara.
The suspects robbed the couple before slashing the man’s legs with a parang. The couple was then bundled into the Toyota Altis and taken to an abandoned hut in Taman Tampoi Indah where the woman was raped.
