From The Star 12 Dec 2008:
Rela man among 12 held
JOHOR BARU: A Rela member and two women were among 12 suspects held for more than 39 cases of armed robbery in the state.
The gang used the women as fronts to go to victims’ houses on the pretext of passing the latter wedding cards. They would then break into the houses and sometimes injure their victims using parangs and axes.
As for the Rela member, police believed that he had rented out his gun to one of the gang members. He was picked up in Nusajaya.
The gang members, aged between 25 and 35, had been remanded until Sunday to facilitate investigations.
A state CID unit, led by C/Insp M. Subramaniam, detained the 12 in a special operation conducted between Nov 25 and 30.
Police also seized about RM500,000 worth of items including cash, jewellery, mobile phones, a flat screen television and a luxury car.
The gang had in its possession parangs, axes and several tools used in the breaking in of homes. Police obtained a lead when they detained a man, one of the gang members, for a robbery and rape offence, at 12.40am in Nusajaya on Nov 25.
Interrogation led to the detention of six other men and two women in Skudai and Tampoi.
Johor deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm I Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah told reporters two other men were nabbed on Sunday after police raided a house in Taiping, Perak. They seized a .38mm revolver and six bullets.
“One of the men is believed to be the mastermind of the gang,” he said.
SAC I Tun Hisan said the gang was also involved in robbery cases in Malacca and Perak. “There are others and we expect to make more arrests soon.’’
He urged anyone with information to contact the police hotline at 07-2212999 or the nearest police station.
