Enchanted’s Queen Narissa = Final Fantasy 8’s Sorceress Edea

So I watched Disney’s Enchanted the other day, and caught some of the many references to earlier Disney works.

But I also noticed something about the villainess Queen Narissa’s costume when she steps into live action. Observe…

Queen Narissa from Echanted, 2007:

Sorceress Edea Kramer from Final Fantasy VIII, 1999:

Note the form-fitting and shapely single piece dress, flowing cape, plunging neckline, fluffy shoulder accessories, and over-the-top decor placed behind the neck.

Here’s another comparison close-up:

Note the elaborate metal tiara headgear, the strongly painted eyebrows, the goth eyeshadow and the dark lipstick. You can see the behind-the-neck getup clearly too.

Evil witch fashion rip-off much?

Okay, so I logicked that Disney and Final Fantasy have crossovers in the Kingdom Hearts series, but it’s still quite a stretch to count Edea as a ‘Disney reference’, particularly when she doesn’t even appear in the series as far as I know.

I don’t see much of a rip-off of it. Sure, we can be quickly reminded of a small resemblance, but really now. Edea’s design is simpler, with that funny thing jutting out from her back forming the veil. The Disney one is… different in many ways. :O

    Lolol, I’m just kidding around.

Would love to see a catfight when they both show up at the prom tho :p

  3. Charlie Says:

I did a specific search on google just to see if I was the only one who thought they resembled one another. Edea is much cooler, though.

    Kewl, I’m not alone either!

Convinced one guy who was watching Enchanted on cable at the same time as me that they had a resemblance, so that makes three!

Personally, I always thought of Edea as one of the most evil villains, until I found out she wasn’t really a villain at all. Just watching her during the game and her dialog actually sent chills down my spine.

  6. Vincent Vega Says:

She does not seem as though she has that much in common, both are just general evil witch types.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I highly doubt that Narissa’s design was influenced by Edea’s design. Narissa’s design is a typically evil dark sorceress, if you watch a few other movies or TV-series with evil sorceresses, you’ll see that many of them have similar costumes to Narissa, so I wouldn’t really say that she was ripped of Edea, seeing as her costume is equally similar or even more similar to many other dark sorceress outfits.

  8. Scott Thong Says:

Well, I wasn’t really serious about the rip-offing, but you have a point… Most character designs fall into one of several broad archetypes. For instance, the pointy-hatted wizard archtype is full of copycats.

Narissa’s costume is much different, in my opinion, than Edea’s. Narissa has a very extravagantly designed costume, where Edea has a very calm, smooth costume. Her dress is much softer, less attention grabbing. As for the plunging neckline, Narissa has a fairly low cut top, however, Edea’s breasts would fall out of her dress, if she stretched the wrong way, haha! Obviously, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you know what I mean. Plus, there’s the helmet-type-deal on Edea’s head, it’s more a helmet than a tiara. However, I do have to say, I can see where you would think so.
