Dr M Hypocritical and Ignorant of Historical Malaysian Street Demo Culture

Hypocrisy Meter from theblogprof.

From The Star 3 August 2009:

Dr M: Anwar started street demo culture

Reports by SIRA HABIBU, LOURDES CHARLES, ANDREW SAGAYAM, NELSON BENJAMIN, MARTIN CALVALHO, HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH, OH ING YEEN, LESTER KONG, IVAN LOH, SHAUN HO, ISABELLE LAI, ROSLINA MOHAMAD, IAN MCINTYRE, GLADYS TAY and DESIREE TRESA GASPER

KUANTAN: Street demonstrations are not part of Malaysian culture, but something that was introduced by PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said there were other ways to uphold one’s causes.

“Holding a street demonstration is not our culture. It is a culture of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“He is the one who introduced street demonstration,” he told reporters here yesterday.

On the Government’s promise to review the ISA, Dr Mahathir said any amendment to the law should be tailored to the current situation.

“All laws, if need be, should be reviewed and designed according to the current situation. This is because things around us keep changing and it is not suitable if we are still using laws of the 18th century.

“It should be applicable for the present situation,” he added.

Just like Najib back in the day, Dr M apparently doesn’t know about, has forgotten, or purposely failed to mention the following:

StreetProtestMalayanUnion

Buuuuuuuuut if he wanted to split hairs, he could argue that the street demos that led to the formation of our nation are Malayan culture, not Malaysian!

But of course, to UMNOputras like the UMNOraja himself, street demos are totally not Malaysian culture except when UMNO is doing it:

” Last time Dr M said” Melayu mudah lupa”. Some people say, many street protests organized by Malays in early 50s to put pressure on the British then. Without street protest or demostrations they said, Malaya could not have achieved independence, and UMNO would not have existed. Well.. maybe.

This is perhaps where most Malaysian bloggers are wrong. They continue to have absolutist attitudes without botherng to analyse or take a step back and accept a differing set of views or opinions.

There is an unholy haste to change without any consideration for the machinery of govenment which even in the most liberal and efficient countries have difficulty making change as fast as the MTV generations (and their ageing ccounterparts )demand.

I think there is much to be gained by reading this chap.

Dr M was PM when the policy at university hostels was racial-representation. That made the unity hostel a malay kampong in a modern cement block. The faces, clothes, sounds, voices, language, music and smells were malay..so what did the very small minority of nonmalay students go? OUTSIDE. At USM, Penang, they went to Sg Dua…
