PM Najib: Cannot Stop Not-Malaysian-Culture Protests, This Time (UPDATE: Attacks on Churches)

Via Malaysia Today:

Najib: We cannot stop Friday’s protest

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak shares the view of his Home Minister cousin Hishammuddin Hussein that Muslims are free to protest and express their views against a court decision which had allowed the Catholic newspaper Herald to use the word “Allah.”

As long as Friday’s demonstration did not spill over into something more series, Najib told reporters that the government cannot stop people from protesting over the Allah issue.

However, he said that the authorities were prepared to face any situation.

“We hope the protests will not spill over. Better still if the protest is minimal,” Najib said after opening the first 1Malaysia Clinic.

Najib said that the authorities could not stop groups from gathering at mosques and protesting there.

“As long as it doesn’t spill over into something serious, they can still express their views,” he said.

[From The Star 8 Jan 2010 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Muslim groups would be allowed to carry out their protests after Friday prayers as long as they confined it to mosques.

“We cannot stop them from congregating at mosques, as long as it does not spill over into something more serious.

“The important thing is that they confine it to the mosque areas,” said Najib said after opening the first 1Malaysia Clinic in Lembah Pantai yesterday.

Najib added that the protests were allowed to continue because the Muslim groups were permitted to express their views on the “Allah” issue.

The Home Ministry had approved police permits to several Muslim groups to hold their protests in various mosques in the city centre. It is learnt that these were the Kampung Baru and Federal Territory mosques among others.

“If they became unruly, the authorities will know what to do,” Najib said.]

Hishammuddin had also stated yesterday that the government did not prohibit the people from expressing their views on the Allah issue but action will be taken if the protests affected security.

Oh… So no problem with them expressing their views, but problem with Bersih movement expressing theirs? Don’t suppose chemically-laced water cannons or shield-bashes will be used if the protests ‘spill over’?

Above is #6 from Malaysian Politics Motivational Posters.

I thought that such mass protests are ‘not Malaysian culture’ as both former PM Mahathir and current PM Najib have stated.

As PM Najib said back then: “But what is the use if such demonstrations only lead to the possibility of ruining what we have built for the country?”

Will any civil servants taking part in the protests be sacked as promised?

And will some of them end up arrested under the ISA as then PM Badawi said?

Just like how you can protest some things but not others and you can burn some effigies but not others.

UPDATE: Well, here we go then… Malaysian Churches Attacked Over ‘Allah Row’.

UPDATE: Protests at mosques peaceful so far.

After the Talibans blew up the Bamiyan Buddha statues in ‘01, they lost Afghanistan and Pakistan, their patron, got a whopping Earthquake in ‘05. Indonesia, with its long known ghastly mob history, also got a horrific Tsunami death death score of ‘04. Nice “coincidences”, don’t you think? No know knows what’s actually left on such Karmic balance sheets.

All peace loving and democratic minded Malaysian brothers and sisters are invited to join us to express our concerns on the deteriorating Freedom of Religion and Minority Rights situation in the country and for us all in one voice to let it be known that these violent and criminal acts must be dealt with in the strongest of terms by the Government.

M’sian values, Asian values, aiyo enough lah. Looks like Anwar join in the bandwagon here

  6. Nasaei Ahmad Says:

I’m sure the authorities are capable of controlling the myriad of minor arsonist attacks on churches.which is now giving very BAD image and great ‘disservice’ to Islam and Malaysia to the world. I hope no political parties take advantage to gain ‘political mileage’ by condemning their rivals etc. Believe me, I bet you..those arsonists highly likely were emotional youths or boys who do not understand their religion very well. However, if they are above 18 years, if detained, we they should be dealt
and face the music with the laws – to the maximum.

Malaysia Boleh mengatasinya. I just hope all of us abstain from anything or any unwanted action that could tarnish bad image to our country.

    No really big deal..

  7. Nasaei Ahmad Says:

If PAS, PKR or any oppososition party is going to have a peaceful demonstration on the street, then UMNO/BN CAN stop it! This time CANNOT !

  8. Nasaei Ahmad Says:

Misunderstanding could be the cause of ‘Allah’ row.. and now the dispute seems to be over.

Insincerity, ignorance, purposely or deliberate attempt, even the ‘hidden agendas’ of certain groups of people could also be the possible motive. We (Muslims or Christians) should do away with this “wickedness”, sorry to say it.. if we were to live in harmony. This is my personal view. Instead, we should respect each other, and their faiths.

I notice the statements made by some non Muslims were also inccorect, and wrong. They simply made it wrong in order to justify their agenda ? I’m not sure.

They said, “Allah” the Arabic for “God” in English. This is incorrect. Actually in Arabic “god” is called “Rob” (Tuhan in Malay). It is like “pemimpin” in Malay for “leader” in English. But what is the name of the “pemimpin” ?

The name of Muslim god is “Allah”. So this exclusively for Islam and Muslim..NOT for Christians, Jews. We all know, this word cannot be found in the Christian Bible.

Therefore, it is wrong to deceitfully say God=Allah, though Allah is what English speaking man understood as “God”. In English, you don’t have the specific name for him, i.e. God name’s is “God”. For Muslim, God’s name is Allah. (He has 99 other “nicknames” as well).

Secondly, as everybody knows, Christians god is triune. Muslim believe it is a greatest blasphemy. Quran clearly says, Allah (“god”) the one and only. He has NO partner WHATSOEVER.

Thus, in such heavy contrast..I frankly recommend non Muslim should not misuse it..even though Indonesia, Egypt or Sabah have been using the term for quite a long time. Yes, it is true, there is no restriction for anybody to MENTION “Allah”. But restriction is: never abuse it ! Saying Allah has 2 other integral partner like “triune” etc is a biggest lie, a biggest abuse ! He is also NOT male nor female. Has NO child or son, nor father.

So..what is the hidden agenda ? I believe our Christians brothers CAN do away with it. Christinity can stand by itself..something like that..

  9. Nasaei Ahmad Says:

Brther Scott, now everybody seems to let bygone be bygone..good.

Anyway, I think this is the right time if anyone, or yourself take this good opportunity to explain or clarify to non-Muslims about what trinity actually is. Majority of non-Christians, even some educated person (of non-Christians I mean..) are not fully understand it. Since it is directly related to God’s attribute, I think you could ‘expedite’ the task of letting people understand it. Most peoples, as we usually noted, were talking on something whic they do not fully understand. Same happened to Muslim communities.

  10. what the........ Says:

You’d think this guy would have something better to protest.
Like the apparent lack of good dental care in Indonesia.

“Indonesian Muslims hold up posters during a protest supporting the people of Gaza in Jakarta, Indonesia, Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010. Hundreds of protesters staged the protest urging Egyptian government to stop its construction of an underground steel wall along its border with Gaza which could eventually block hundreds of smuggling tunnels and deprive Gaza’s Hamas rulers of their only lifeline.”

  11. mindabudaya Says:

How could these people be so ignorant, nonsensical and bite the hands that feeds them?

This ongoing issue, that seems to be nudging our hospitable head almost way too hard now. Within the gratifying myth that we conjure up, on how we are from the same roots and share similar folk traditions. but almost too often too much now these south to the border neighbor, our ill mannered less sophisticated separated by the sea neighbor are almost wanting us all here to really admit that we actually does not gladly embrace what similarity we share, and rather be admitting at how they are portraying a behavior so totally over reacting and to be taking this thing way off the original context and should not be treated either seriously or if not to be portrayed so downright dumb.

How these so called Indonesian activists are taking a rash and harsh views and stance towards our country here. these so called activist who seems to be thinking well of themselves, having to think that how they are so loud in their act of defiant and ready to be filmed by the press as so rebelliously hot headed and yelling, throwing poop and climbing on the gates of our embassy there.

Well, so much for how are they being portrayed as national heroes in their nation but over in our land, by seeing reports channeled out by media, it is just simply justifying our long in-depth views at how irrelevantly ignorant lower class minded citizens these bunch of people are. We almost had always looked one or two notch down at them, but this recent upheaval, really sealed the perception block. the apelike feces throwing acts, the burning of our Jalur Gemilang, the picketing at our Malaysian embassy, the on top of the gate barking and howling, are all ultimately perceived and judged by our simple minded Malaysian commoners here as acts that only will be done by third class worldwide known reputation society, that tends to always over re-acts to situation. Almost like watching tribe people program in the national Geographic channel. You can never tell the difference.

But, out of this out of proportion ordeals, the most disturbing facts would be how could this bunch of people who almost once or even more than that, or got relatives over in our country getting paid by our currency, be it legally or illegally. How could they be so ignorant to the facts at how our soil had been contributing to raising their young generations? how our burnt at Jalur Gemilang were the flag that enable them to feed their family, to enable them to feel at home and much more, enable them to have savings to go further in life. How could they be so nonsensical and non sensitive towards those things?

We are almost entirely your bread and basket if compared to your own poor stricken motherland. How rude and shameless of you to scowl and howl at us so disproportionately. How could you keep on biting the hands that continuously with sense and heart keep feeding you and your migrant generations with nutritious way of life and healthy frame of mind? Just remember how disarray and poor you will be if the land that you throw poop at do not need your service anymore. To cease appreciate your non stopping ever flowing group of people from crossing the sea to actually be a human being again. Just hope that after all this biting and chomping of the appreciative hands that never stop to give, we Malaysian are still having the empathy and sympathy to deal with your lower class tribe like antics anymore in the future.
