Indonesians in show of violent force at stadium

KUALA LUMPUR: They came to the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil to attend a concert by artistes from their home country, but many of the Indonesian fans had more than just tickets.

They had come with bags containing parang and other sharp objects.

Two rival gangs later faced off outside the stadium where two men were injured on Sunday evening.
Deadly haul: Supt Abdul Rahim (centre) showing the weapons seized at the stadium last Sunday.

Police arrested 16 men and seized more than 40 weapons, said acting Cheras OCPD Supt Abdul Rahim Hamzah Othman.

“We saw some of them wearing white head bands and carrying sharp weapons.

“Surprised at our presence, all of them discarded bags containing sharp weapons by the roadside and fled,” he said.

It is believed the two gangs met at the car park to settle an old issue.

All the suspects were picked up outside the stadium while trying to escape from the police.

“In the bags, we found parang, hammers, steel pipes, wooden sticks and sharpened belt buckles,” said Supt Abdul Rahim.

He added that one of the two injured men was in critical condition at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre’s intensive care unit.

All the other men have been handed over to the Immigration Department for further action as they did not have valid documents.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for possession of weapons at a riot.
