Veiling the Uncovered Meat

If you remember, our dear Nik Aziz and Australia’s Sheik Hilaly recommend that women cover up completely (including wearing a veil) to deter sexual predators. Their logic is that when rape happens, it is solely the seductive assets of the woman that are to blame.

Sheik Hilaly in particular made his infamous remark that likened women to uncovered meat. Quoted below:

“If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it … whose fault is it, the cats’ or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem. If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred.” – Sheik ‘I Am The Protector of Women’ Hilaly

So allow me to demonstrate the efficacy of the good mufti’s strategy. Behold this yummy piece of sweet, seductive salmon that is totally uncovered:

                            

See how tempting it is? Yum! So we’d better put a veil on it, and quick:

          

Amazing! Covering the fish with a tissue paper is EXACTLY like covering a woman’s hair with a veil. They are both completely effective at deterring hungry cats/rapists.

But wait! The mufti would recommend covering up the meat entirely. So let’s do that instead:

          

Amazing! If the room were completely snow white too, the cats would never realize there was a yummy salmon there! Similarly, if the streets had no lights and it were moonless in deepest night, potential rapists would never see the black-clad women as they stumbled around blindly!

So does it work in a reality where the world is not monochromatic?

      

But snide comments from a cut-and-paste image of a cat aside, do Aziz and Hilaly’s recommendations REALLY work? First, read the following news article from today’s papers.

Burglar rapes 73-year-old at her home

KUALA TERENGGANU: A 73-year-old woman was raped by a burglar at her home in Kampung Ging Batu Limau Nipis, Setiu.  

She was washing dishes on Saturday when the burglar entered her house and demanded cash and jewelleries but became angry when the old woman tried to defend herself. 

He then threw her on the floor and raped her. 

State CID chief Asst Comm Mohd Hazam Abdul Halim said the woman later walked to the village headman’s house to seek help. 

The woman has been warded at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital. 

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old housewife claimed that a cook at a post-natal traditional treatment centre in Kuala Berang raped her a few weeks ago while she was recuperating after giving birth. She related the incident to her husband after he returned from out of town. 

Police have detained a 50-year-old suspect.

So, our dear Nik Aziz and Sheik Hilaly, please explain to us again how you are SURE that wearing a veil and staying indoors will prevent 73-year old women’s YUMMY meat from luring those hungry cats. After all, we know that NO REAL MAN could possibly resist the ALLURE of wrinkles and other octogenarian body parts.

Ah, enough with the sarcasm. Men like you are IDIOTS and very bloody PROUD idiots at that. Your pride and self-importance blind you to any views but your own. Facts and the truth can never change your mind, because your ego believes it can bend reality to its whim.

Tell me, how is it that I can go around living my life surrounded by women not wrapped up in a burqa, and not be overcome by an urge to rape them? How is it that I can stay in an apartment with pretty girls for housemates, and not be ‘forced’ to peep on them? Why is it that I do not act like an uncontrollable wildcat at the sight of a head of female hair?

Am I just much stronger willed than men like you? Am I not a real, hot-blooded young man? Or is it that you are simply wrong and misguided, yet unwilling to admit it despite all the evidence?

Women covered from head to toe are raped. Women who are generally considered unattractive are raped. Grandmothers are raped. Innocent little girls are raped – in Malaysia, especially those supposedly under the care of fathers, step-fathers and uncles! Young boys are raped. Animals are raped. Even month-old babies are raped!

Do you really mean to tell us all that victims like those mentioned above INVITED the rapists to assault them by the way they dressed, talked and walked? It seems that you must, because you will never admit that men are capable of such evil acts because of their own sinful desires.

All your myopic views and fiery comments accomplish is to embolden men to act like the beasts you liken them to, while pushing down women like the pieces of meat you feel they are. Your recommendations and rules may force restrictions and regulations onto women… But they do NOTHING to address the blackness in the hearts of men.

“Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch! Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body… But they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence!” – Colossians 2:21,23
