Obama’s Lipstick on Pig Speech Stole Content From Editorial Cartoon

UPDATE: It seems that even Obama’s pig-with-lipstick remark was stolen from an editorial cartoon! Now you tell me that Copy-Cato-Bama really didn’t intend to slur Palin.

Obama Pig Lipstick Stole From Cartoon

On a tip from Red Planet Cartoons.

—————

So Obama really stepped in the pigshot (sic) with his lipstick on a pig remark.

Could the controversy get any more embarassing for him? It sure could!

I love editorial cartoons, and I laugh at Obama, so this is the perfect combination:

From World Net Daily:

Obama plagiarized ‘lipstick speech’?
Comments almost word-for-word copy of Washington Post political cartoon
By Aaron Klein

Remarks by Sen. Barack Obama yesterday leading up to his controversial “lipstick on a pig” jab at the McCain campaign mirror almost word-for-word a political cartoon published last week in the Washington Post.

Much has been made of Obama criticizing McCain’s idea of “change” by stating, “You can put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig.” Taking it as an attack McCain’s vice-presidential running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, the campaign responded with a video on the Internet today.

But less attention has been paid to Obama’s statements just preceding the lipstick reference, which appear to be an un-attributed copy of the caption in a Washington Post political cartoon by Tom Toles Sept 5.

Obama Pig Lipstick Stole From Cartoon

Obama stated yesterday:

“‘Watch out, George Bush, except for economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics – we’re really going to shake things up in Washington!’ That’s not change … you know, you can put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig.”

The political cartoon, also mocking McCain’s and Palin’s concept of change, stated four days earlier:

“Watch out, Mr. Bush! With the exception of economic policy and energy policy and social issues and tax policy and foreign policy and Supreme Court appointments and Rove-style politics, we’re coming in there to shake things up!”

The similarities between the cartoon and Obama’s speech were first noticed by users at the Free Republic website.

Obama’s campaign did not immediately return a WND call seeking comment.

Video again:

Only the Obamessiah could manage to not only be so unoriginal and uninspired as to pilfer talking points from an editorial cartoon (or else his speech writers did it, which makes him even more inept)… And stick a botched joke that is immediately and widely construed as sexism onto it for good measure!

See this post for editorial cartoons mocking Obama’s piggishness.

The circle will be complete when someone draws an editorial cartoon about Obama stealing content from an editorial cartoon.

  1. Democrat Dave Says:

Barack Obama gave attribution to the cartoonist in his speech. No harm, no foul. What’s the real issue here? Distraction from the issues about nonsense? Enough! Democrat Dave http://democratdave.wordpress.com

  2. unastronaut. Says:

I’m going to ask the same question I’ve asked every other blog with this cartoon up, are you challenging the validity of any of those claims or just crying foul? Dave here has an excellent point, that plagiarism would only be possible without attribution. That still leaves the content of the cartoon/speech.

  3. kingdom media Says:

McCain has become quite the politician since he got his party’s nomination… he has proven time and again that his strategy for winning is based on personal attacks and distracting people from the main issues

  4. wits0 Says:

    That sounds like Fakir instead.

  5. revjim Says:

As per the McCain campaign’s swift and shrill accusation that Obama was referring to Palin with the lipstick on a pig comment, is that not sexist in and of itself? If they immediately think of Sarah Palin when he mentions a cosmetically enhanced pig, though Obama had not spoken her name, what does that say about how McCain’s campaign thinks of their VP elect? Almost borders on misogyny.

  6. Scott Thong Says:

    Well, Dave and unastronaut…

I’ve googled around, and could not find a single refutation of the accusation that Obama plagiarized his speech from the editorial cartoon. Nor did I find any demonstration of Obama giving attribution to the cartoonist.

Not even on your own blogs!

Perhaps you could help me out here?

And yes, I am crying foul rather than challenging the validity of the claims of the editorial cartoon. I actually agree with its point.

Heck, I support McCain-Palin in part because they are running with the same kind of Conservative policies that Bush has!

But the change that actually they want is a chucking out of Washington politics of self-gain rather than serving the people.

Like, y’know, $100,000 in big wind stocks Pelosi’s 9%-approval rating Democrat-dominated Congress that refuses to even debate drilling even when the people demand it.

The cartoon therefore misportrays the meaning of McCain-Palin’s change.

Hey, you can add that to your everywhere comments.

  7. Scott Thong Says:

revjim, even Obama’s audience immediately thought he was ribbing Palin with his pig/lipstick remark. Is it thus so strange that McCain’s ever-ready and alert team might see it as such?

  8. chandran Says:

I’m not sure what Obama had in mind, but I find it odd that in pages of outrage devoted to the supposed excesses of the McCain campaign, Kurtz finds no room to mention the fact that prominent Democrats (not anonymous emailers, who are much worse) have said that Governor Palin is Pontius Pilate and that her primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.

The truth is that Sarah Palin has been the object of the most vicious and concerted smear campaign in modern American history. But that fact doesn’t cause the media (or Howard Kurtz) to get mad.

It’s not too hard to diagnose why, as Kurtz correctly says, “the media are getting mad.” They’re getting mad because their candidate is losing. They’ve spent years building him up and covering for his mistakes and shortcomings, and he is such a stiff that he can’t coast across the finish line. I’d be mad too, I guess, but I think I’d have the decency not to take it out on Sarah Palin.

  9. chandran Says:

In the wake of repeated comments from Democrats comparing Sen. Barack Obama to Jesus and Gov. Sarah Palin to Pontius Pilate, radio host Rush Limbaugh today blasted the Democrats’ strategy as “pathological” and “insane.”

“I know Jesus Christ. I pray to Jesus Christ all the time,” said Limbaugh.” I study what Jesus Christ did and said all the time, and let me tell you something, Barack Obama, you are no Jesus Christ.”

He also attacked Obama’s stances for abortion and sex education for children in kindergarten, saying, “I can’t find any such references to Jesus promoting infanticide nor do I find any references to Jesus Christ suggesting sex education be taught to 4- and 5-year-olds, but I’m still looking in the New Testament and I’ll let you all know if I come up with anything.”

    Hussein Obama the Pieman:

“Barack Obama smashed his record. No sooner did the Illinois Senator set a new bar for mentions of the word ‘pie’ in a single campaign event, than he shattered his own mark. This morning, as previously noted on ABCNews.com, he spoke the word ‘pie’ a staggering 13 times in one 86 second period. It was a number most thought could never be matched; like Hank Aaron’s 755, Mark Spitz’s 7 gold medals. But like Aaron and Spitz, Obama learned nothing lasts forever. A mere 2 hours , Obama did better; 15 mentions of the word ‘pie’ in 104 seconds.”–ABCNews.com, Oct. 11

  14. 808's and Heartbreak greatest hits Says:

    Kanye West and new logo…

Kanye West went to classify 808s & Heartbreak as a pop lyrics, stating his disdain towards the contemporary backlash to the concept of pop music and expressed admiration for what some pop stars have accomplished in their lives….

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something which I think I would never understand.
It seems too complex and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post,
I will try to get the hang of it!
