Ann Coulter’s Statistics on Single Motherhood (and the Suffering it Causes)

Sourced from Right Wing News, here are statistics from Ann Coulter’s book Guilty: Liberal “Victims” and Their Assault on America that show how single motherhood is the cause of more crime than any other factor:

“Of all single mothers in America, only 6.5 percent of them are widows, 37.8 percent are divorced, and 41.3 percent gave birth out of wedlock. The 6.5 percent of single mothers whose husbands have died shouldn’t be called ‘single mothers’ at all. We already have a word for them: ‘widows.’ Their children do just fine compared with the children of married parents.” — P.35

“Here is the lottery ticket that single mothers are handing their innocent children by choosing to raise them without fathers: Controlling for socioeconomic status, race, and place of residence, the strongest predictor of whether a person will end up in prison is that he was raised by a single parent. By 1996, 70 percent of inmates in state juvenile detention centers serving long-term sentences were raised by single mothers. Seventy-two percent of juvenile murderers and 60 percent of rapists come from single-mother homes. Seventy percent of teenage births, dropouts, suicides, runaways, juvenile delinquents, and child murderers involve children raised by single mothers. Girls raised without fathers are more sexually promiscuous and more likely to end up divorced. A 1990 study by the Progressive Policy Institute showed that after controlling for single motherhood, the difference between black and white crime rates disappeared.

Various studies have come up with slightly different numbers, but all the figures are grim. According to the Index of Leading Cultural Indicators, children from single-parent families account for 63 percent of all youth suicides, 70 percent of all teenage pregnancies, 71 percent of all adolescent chemical/substance abuse, 80 percent of all prison inmates, and 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children.

A study cited in the Village Voice produced similar numbers. It found that children brought up in single-mother homes ‘are five times more likely to commit suicide, nine times more likely to drop out of high school, 10 times more likely to abuse chemical substances, 14 times more likely to commit rape (for the boys), 20 times more likely to end up in prison, and 32 times more likely to run away from home.’ Single motherhood is like a farm team for future criminals and social outcasts.

….Many of these studies, for example, are from the 1990s, when the percentage of teenagers raised by single parents was lower than it is today. In 1990, 28 percent of children under eighteen were being raised in one-parent homes (mother or father), and 71 percent were being raised in two-parent homes. By 2005, more than one-third of all babies born in the United States were illegitimate. That’s a lot of social problems coming.

…Imagine an America with 70 percent fewer juvenile delinquents, 70 percent fewer teenage births, 63 to 70 percent fewer teenage suicides, and 70 percent to 90 percent fewer runaways and you will appreciate what the sainted single mothers have accomplished.” — P.37-38

“But Americans used to be able to care about the circumstances of their children’s births: The illegitimacy rate has gone up by more than 300 percent since 1970. Moreover, even assuming that, sometime around the year of 1969, the entire human race lost the ability to defer gratification, there’s still the wholly volitional decision not to give the baby up for adoption.

In 1979, only about 600,000 babies were born out of wedlock and one quarter of them were put up for adoption. By 1991, the number of illegitimate births had doubled to 1,225,000 annually, but only 4 percent were allowed to be adopted — and most of those babies were snapped up by either Angelina Jolie or Mia Farrow. By 2003, 1.5 million illegitimate babies were born every year, but only about 14,000 of them, less than 1 percent, were put for adoption. Not surprisingly, unwed mothers who care enough to give their children up for adoption also come overwhelmingly from responsible backgrounds. They tend to have higher education and income levels and to come from intact upper-middle-class families with highly educated parents.

You will note that we do not read about adopted children filling up the prisons, welfare rolls, and runaway shelters. Adopted children are no worse off — and, indeed, are generally better off — than nonadopted children.” — P.43

“A 2008 study led by Georgia State University economist Benjamin Scafidi found that single mothers — unwed or divorced — cost the US taxpayer $112 billion every year.” — P.51

“According to the US Justice Department crime statistics, domestic abuse is virtually nonexistent for married women living with their husbands. From 1993 to 2005, the number of married women victimized by their husbands ranged from 0.9 to 3.2 per 1000. Domestic violence was about 40 times more likely among divorced or separated women, ranging from 37.7 to 118.5 per 1000. Even never married women were more than twice as likely to be victims of domestic violence as married women.” — P.57-58

“A Cornell study found that unwed mothers are 30 percent less likely to marry than other single women…” — P.70

See also Coulter’s own writings about her findings in her articles, which has some overlap:

Secondhand Children:

According to hysterical anti-smoking zealots at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking costs the nation $92 billion a year in “lost productivity.” (Obviously these conclusions were produced by people who not only have never smoked, but also don’t know any smokers, who could have told them smoking makes us 10 times more productive.)

Meanwhile, single motherhood costs taxpayers about $112 billion every year, according to a 2008 study by Georgia State University economist Benjamin Scafidi.

Smoking has no causal relationship to crime, has little effect on others and — let’s be honest — looks cool. Controlling for income, education and occupation, it causes about 200,000 deaths per year, mostly of people in their 70s.

Single motherhood, by contrast, directly harms children, occurs at a rate of about 1.5 million a year and has a causal relationship to criminal behavior, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, sexual victimization and almost every other social disorder.

If a pregnant woman smokes or drinks, we blame her. But if a woman decides to have a fatherless child, we praise her as brave — even though the outcome for the child is much worse.

Studies — including one by the liberal Progressive Policy Institute — have shown that controlling for factors such as poverty and socioeconomic status, single motherhood accounts for the entire difference in black and white crime rates.

Murder Spree by People Who Refuse to Ask for Directions:

As I describe in my new book, “Guilty: Liberal ‘Victims’ and Their Assault on America,” controlling for socioeconomic status, race and place of residence, the strongest predictor of whether a person will end up in prison is that he was raised by a single parent. (The second strongest factor is owning a Dennis Kucinich bumper sticker.)

By 1996, 70 percent of inmates in state juvenile detention centers serving long-term sentences were raised by single mothers. Seventy percent of teenage births, dropouts, suicides, runaways, juvenile delinquents and child murderers involve children raised by single mothers. Girls raised without fathers are more sexually promiscuous and more likely to end up divorced.

A 1990 study by the left-wing Progressive Policy Institute showed that, after controlling for single motherhood, the difference in black and white crime disappeared.

Various studies come up with slightly different numbers, but all the figures are grim. A study cited in the far left-wing Village Voice found that children brought up in single-mother homes “are five times more likely to commit suicide, nine times more likely to drop out of high school, 10 times more likely to abuse chemical substances, 14 times more likely to commit rape (for the boys), 20 times more likely to end up in prison, and 32 times more likely to run away from home.”

With new children being born, running away, dropping out of high school and committing murder every year, it’s not a static problem to analyze. But however the numbers are run, single motherhood is a societal nuclear bomb.

Many of these studies, for example, are from the ’90s, when the percentage of teenagers raised by single parents was lower than it is today. In 1990, 28 percent of children under 18 were being raised in one-parent homes — mother or father, divorced or never-married. By 2005, more than one-third of all babies born in the U.S. were illegitimate.

That’s a lot of social problems in the pipeline.

Think I’m being cruel? Imagine an America with 60 to 70 percent fewer juvenile delinquents, teenage births, teenage suicides and runaways, and you will appreciate what the sainted “single mothers” have accomplished.

And yet again:

Erol Ricketts, a (black) demographer and sociologist with the Rockefeller Foundation who researched the origin of black female-headed families in the 1980s. His studies showed that the black family was thriving from the late 19th century through most of the 20th century.

You don’t get much poorer, deprived or discriminated against than being a black person in America just a generation out of slavery.

Examining nearly a century of U.S. census reports, Ricketts found that between 1890 and 1950, blacks had higher marriage rates than whites. Until 1970, black women were more likely to get married than white women — and that was despite the high mortality rates among black men, leaving fewer available for marriage. In three of four decennial years between 1890 and 1920, black men out-married white men…

Whatever else may cause illegitimacy and its associated problems, it isn’t poverty, discrimination, lack of education, unemployment or slavery. Black Americans had all those handicaps — and yet they still had strong families and low crime rates from 1890 until the 1960s.

But in the ’60s, liberals decided it would be a great idea to start subsidizing illegitimacy.

In 1970, for the first time, the marriage rate for black women fell below 70 percent. But even then, a majority of black children were still living with both parents. By 2010, only 30.1 percent of blacks above the age of 15 were married, compared to 52.7 percent of whites.

See also statistics on children of single mothers who used sperm donors and same sex relationship mothers, and the 3000% greater domestic violence , 19 times higher cheating, and 85% of partnerings that don’t last past 11 years of homosexual pairings which surely contribute to the problem child trend.

Harvard Study:

1) Family structure. Of all the factors most predictive of economic mobility in America, one factor clearly stands out in their study: family structure. By their reckoning, when it comes to mobility, “the strongest and most robust predictor is the fraction of children with single parents.” They find that children raised in communities with high percentages of single mothers are significantly less likely to experience absolute and relative mobility. Moreover, “[c]hildren of married parents also have higher rates of upward mobility if they live in communities with fewer single parents.” In other words, as the figure below indicates, it looks like a married village is more likely to raise the economic prospects of a poor child.

“What makes this finding particularly significant is that this is the first major study showing that rates of single parenthood at the community level are linked to children’s economic opportunities over the course of their lives. A lot of research—including new research from the Brookings Institution—has shown us that kids are more likely to climb the income ladder when they are raised by two, married parents. But this is the first study to show that lower-income kids from both single- and married-parent families are more likely to succeed if they hail from a community with lots of two-parent families.”

Can I use some of your comments and your statistics (Scott Thong) from Ann Coulter’s new book for an article in a local newspaper (Hilltop Reporter ~ Comal County, TX) on fatherlessness? I’ll give credit if you’d like.

  3. Scott Thong Says:

No credit to me for the statistics – all I did was repeat what miss Coulter is trying to tell the world! You can cite my comments, but honestly, I’m just a regular joe who just happens to lean American Conservative and find miss Coulter’s writing superb while living in a Muslim-majority developing nation (go figure!).

I don’t have any right to the findings or statistics I quoted from Ann Coulter. However, I am quite sure she would be completely willing for you to cite her findings as long as you give her due credit. From what I know, there are plenty of writers, reporters and editorials that have cited Ann in their professional articles – for example, the very article which I cite in my blog post, http://www.rightwingnews.com/mt331/2009/04/ann_coulter_on_single_mothers.php

If you want to ask her personally first, her site is at http://www.anncoulter.com/

I’m not sure where she can be contacted directly at – the site says speeches by her can be booked at http://www.anncoulter.com/cgi-local/content.cgi?name=book_a_speech

Just a tip, these statistics are the only study that has shown a corrolation between single mothers and crime, this study was never published in a scientific journal, just to show you how good it’s methods were. This study is basically a joke in scientific studies.
Real scientific studies have shown no correlation between single mothers and crime, there is a larg correlation between poverty and crime.
Ann coulter is not only a cherry picker but one that doesn’t even pick cherries, she picks crap.
Progressive Research Group is a ultra-conservative think tank, and they have never produced a published study that has been accepted by a peer review journal.
It would be like me saying I did a study showing all rapes and murders are committed by conservative individiuals.

And you don’t think that there is any connection between single motherhood and poverty? Duh!

But any citations for ‘real scientific studies’ would be helpful.

Funnily enough, that’s what the NYT did to Iraq/Afghanistan veterans.

  6. Lisa Ross Says:

I have been a social worker for 12 years, and we have been looking at similar SCIENTIFIC research on the harm caused by single parenting for YEARS. People like David don’t see outside their own paradigm – not a very scientific mind. He conveniently overlooked that the research controlled for socioeconomic factors, i.e. poverty.
Our welfare system has incentivized single motherhood. I’ve heard many a young woman say that she and her boyfriend won’t get married because they need Medicaid to pay for the baby. We are looking at 50 years worth of social engineering where “the less fortunate” continue to procreate on taxpayer dollars.
Meanwhile they roll up to our local WIC office to get their formula vouchers in newer cars than mine. Pretty twisted system.

Your link is broken, but I found the article here. As usual, Ann misrepresented the facts to suit her own twisted political agenda.

  8. Steven Says:

Shoot…you think she twisted the facts Ron? Are you dull enough to suggest that single motherhood has no correlation to crime and societal ills? Come to the inner cities my friend.

Since you apparently lack reading comprehension Steven — Intelligent people would have clued in to the fact that the two words in blue (“here” and “facts”) were direct links to the sources being referenced — let me point out the obvious to the seemingly oblivious: I was commenting on Anne’s mis-cast aspersions about the NYT article on veterans suffering from PTSD.

No one ever seems to mention that all children have fathers. If their fathers choose not to participate in their child’s life should society not harass them rather than the one doing all the work, the single Mom?The harassment of the single Mom puts women’s lib back many years and it has to stop. This attitude against single Mom’s is what creates the problem, we should support them better so they can support their children better.
In addition, my Mom raised 7 kids on her own, we all went to University and all have masters or PHD’s. My first child was raised in a traditional family setting, my last 2 not. My eldest has more issues than my younger 2.
I should also point out that I am a pediatric behavioral scientist and I specialize in child IQ and education.

  15. Scott Thong Says:

I salute your mom’s hard efforts, and am glad you turned out well.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t put the blame of mothers who are abandoned by their male partner. I blame the current state of society, and those who gleefully worked to make it this way – where mothers are ENCOURAGED to CHOOSE single motherhood, where men are so sidelined by socio-legal realities that see no benefit in sticking around to be dads, where Big Government actively seeks more new ways to demolish familial ties in order to better control the populace as ‘Big Daddy’.
