Just one problem: Palin said no such thing. She simply said that Iraq-bound U.S. troops would “defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.”

Which “Bush doctrine” did you mean, Charlie?:

The New York Times got it wrong. And Charlie Gibson got it wrong.

There is no single meaning of the Bush doctrine. In fact, there have been four distinct meanings, each one succeeding another over the eight years of this administration — and the one Charlie Gibson cited is not the one in common usage today. It is utterly different.

He asked Palin, “Do you agree with the Bush doctrine?”

Fabricating a GOP tyrant – This is the dishonest marginalization of a candidate some members of the mainstream media simply do not like. If she won’t marginalize herself with outrageous statements, some will pull them from thin air. Comparing the Charlie Gibson Interviews– Obama vs. Palin On Religion – Charles Gibson grilled Governor Palin over a Lincoln quote she recited at her church months earlier that had found its way into the media from the Far Left blogs. Barack Obama left his church of 20 years five days before Gibson interviewed the senator. It did not come up once.

Ann Coulter on the issue – That summer, in 1776, Gen. George Washington — a charter member of the founding fathers — rallied his troops, saying: “The time is now near at hand which must probably determine whether Americans are to be freemen or slaves. … The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of the army.” So Washington not only used the phrase “under God,” but gave us one of the earliest known references to the rights of the “unborn.” That’s right! George Washington was a “pro-life extremist,” just like Sarah Palin.

ABC’s Anti-Palin Camera Tricks – While it’s true that Governor Palin is of less stature than Mr. Gibson, the deliberate choice of the camera’s height, framing and the use of telephoto lenses all serve to make Mr. Gibson look overpowering and Governor Palin the weak prey.

Palin supposedly tried to ban…that hadn’t even been published yet.The smear merchants who continue to circulate the list also failed to do a simple Google search, which would have showed them that the bogus Sarah Palin Banned Book List is almost an exact copy-and-paste reproduction of a generic list of “Books Banned at One Time or Another in the United States” that has been floating around the Internet for years.

If book banning is such a life-and-death issue to these celebrity foot soldiers for free speech, where were they four years ago when John Kerry and his rabid minions were pressuring Regnery Publishing to withdraw “Unfit for Command” from bookstores? Where were they two years ago when two Democrat lawmakers, New Jersey Assemblywomen Joan Quigley and Linda Stender, called on merchants to ban the sale of Ann Coulter’s book, Godless,” because of her remarks about anti-Bush 9/11 widows.

Where were they in 2005, when a University of North Carolina law professor, Eric Muller, called on his blog readers to get one of my books banned from a national parks bookstore? Where were they when J. Millard Burr and Robert O. Collins’s “Alms for Jihad” was banned in Britain; Robert Spencer’s “The Truth about Muhammad” was banned in Pakistan; and “The Jewel of Medina” was banned, well, everywhere?

63) The Problem with the Media’s Palin Coverage (via Michelle Malkin):

I usually don’t encourage complaints about press bias. Of course the mainstream media is biased to the left; everyone knows that, except possibly the mainstream media itself. So the only alternative is to take that bias into account and find ways to push back against it and to go around the mainstream media to connect with the voters directly. In balance, I think this turns out to be an advantage for the Republicans and a disadvantage for Democrats, who frequently mistake the adulation of the press for the support of actual voters.

That said, I have never seen anything like the wave of hostility and contempt aimed at Sarah Palin from the moment she was nominated. This press partisanship is a crucial part of the story, because it explains the difficulty of discovering who Sarah Palin is. And ironically, the pompous hostility of the press has served as a foil which Palin has used to increase her popular appeal.

Most of these smears were limited to the Internet–but some of them made their way into the mainstream media, and all of them have been widely accepted as truth by those who want to dismiss Palin.

It is clear that the press wants their man Barack Obama to win–and as a result, they have obscured rather than illuminated our attempt to make an objective assessment of who Sarah Palin is, how she thinks, and what she stands for. And as I have pointed out, the worst consequence of this transparent bias may turn out to be that the press has destroyed the credibility it would need to make valid criticisms of Palin.
