Pilots run out of fuel, pray, land near Jesus sign

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – It seemed like an almost literal answer to their prayers. When two New Zealand pilots ran out of fuel in a microlight airplane they offered prayers and were able to make an emergency landing in a field — coming to rest right next to a sign reading, “Jesus is Lord.”

Grant Stubbs and Owen Wilson, both from the town of Blenheim on the country’s South Island, were flying up the sloping valley of Pelorus Sound when the engine spluttered, coughed and died.

“My friend and I are both Christians so our immediate reaction in a life-threatening situation was to ask for God’s help,” Stubbs told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

He said he prayed during the ill-fated flight Sunday that the tiny craft would get over the top of a ridge and that they would find a landing site that was not too steep — or in the nearby sea.

Wilson said that the pair would have been in deep trouble if the fuel had run out five minutes earlier.

“If it had to run out, that was the place to be,” he said. “There was an instantaneous answer to prayer as we crossed the ridge and there was an airfield — I didn’t know it existed till then.”

After Wilson glided the powerless craft to a landing on the grassy strip, the pair noticed they were beside a 20-foot-tall sign that read, “Jesus is Lord — The Bible.”

“When we saw that, we started laughing,” Stubbs said.

Nearby residents provided them with gas to fly the home-built plane back to base.

The Atomic Bombs Saved 35 Million Lives

If you think that America showed supreme arrogance, disdain for human life, spitefulness and evil in using the atomic bombs against Japan when it was clearly winning the war…

You don’t read much history.

Yes, it’s true that those earliest nuclear weapons caused horrific death and destruction.

The first atomic bomb, dropped on Hiroshima, killed roughly 70,000 people immediately. Japan refused to surrender. Perhaps they reasoned that America had only one bomb, and could not make more.

The second atomic bomb, dropped on Nagasaki, killed roughly 40,000 to 70,000 people immediately.

Together, the two atomic bombs were responsible for the immediate and over-time deaths of around 140,000 people.

Awed and stunned by this raw power – and perhaps suddenly realizing that the ‘soft’ Americans were actually willing to use such power – the hard-hearted Japanese leaders were forced to unconditionally surrender.

Compare this to the cost in lives for a conventional military invasion of Japan.

In just the Battle of Okinawa alone, the invasion and securing of the tiny islands cost over 90,000 Japanese military deaths, close to 50,000 Allied deaths, and from 75,000 to 140,000 civilians dead or missing.

That’s a total of around 280,000 lives lost to secure just a foothold from which to invade the main Japanese islands.

So in the two atomic bombings, only HALF the number of casualties were incurred as compared to the invasion of Okinawa. An equal number of civilian lives were lost in Okinawa as compared to the maximum estimate for the two atomic bombs. (Yet I don’t hear much in the way of anti-conventional warfare protests.)

Okinawa had a pre-invasion population of about 500,000. That means that up to a third of the entire civilian population was killed in the World War II invasion of the islands. Add to that military deaths equal to another one third of Okinawa’s civilian population.

Part of the reason for this was the fanatical bushido code of the soldiers, who encouraged or forced civilians to hold out to the death against the Allies – or even commit mass suicide rather than surrender and ‘lose face’.

And meanwhile in the homeland of Japan, the Shosango and later Ketsugo war policies were being implemented to encourage every single man, woman and child to fight the Allies to the death… Even if they had only bamboo to use as a weapon. (I, Scott, saw footage of such World War II Japanese women undergoing bamboo spear combat drills.)

If the main Japanese islands had been invaded, a bloody massacre far more grueling and drawn out than Okinawa could be expected.

In 1945, Japan as a whole had a population of around 52 million… Roughly 100 times as many people as Okinawa had.

If the Japanese had not been forced to surrender by the atomic bombs, a conventional invasion might have incurred a similar casualty ratio as Okinawa had.

That would be roughly 35 million lives lost, half of those being Japanese civilians forced or propagandized into fighting to the death.

I’m not conjecturing out of thin air here – the official Allied plans for invading Japan if it refused to surrender predicted a cost of 1 million American and 10 million Japanese lives. Even after the two bombs were dropped, the military planners were unsure as to whether the stubborn Japanese leaders would keep on fighting tooth and claw.

In 2000, for the first time in years, the government ordered a new supply of Purple Hearts. The old supply, manufactured in anticipation of the invasion of the home islands of Japan during World War II, had begun to run low.

The decoration, which goes to American troops wounded in battle and the families of those killed in action, had been only one of countless thousands of supplies produced for the planned 1945 invasion of Japan, which military leaders believed would last until almost 1947.

Fortunately, the invasion never took place. All the other implements of that war — tanks and LSTs, bullets and K-rations — have long since been sold, scrapped or used up, but these medals, struck for their grandfathers, are still being pinned on the chests of young soldiers.

In all, approximately 1,506,000 Purple Hearts were produced for the war effort with production reaching its peak as the Armed Services geared up for the invasion of Japan. Despite wastage, pilfering and items that were simply lost, the number of decorations was approximately 495,000 after the war.

The veterans were heavily criticized in some academic circles for their insistence that the dropping of the atom bomb had ended the war quickly and ultimately saved countless thousands of American — and Japanese — lives during an invasion.

When hearing of the new production, Jim Pattillo, then president of the 20th Air Force Association stated that, “detailed information on the kind of casualties expected would have been a big help in demonstrating to modern Americans that those were very different times.”

Medical and training information in “arcanely worded military documents can be confusing,” said Pattillo, “but everyone understands a half-million Purple Hearts.

So it’s 140,000 deaths from the two atomic bombs, versus a potential 11 to 35 million deaths from a conventional invasion of Japan.

Do the math. (Here, I’ll do it for you – 250 times more deaths would have been incurred had the two atomic bombs not been used.)

And keep in mind the massive civilian and prisoner death toll caused by the brutal Japanese invasions and occupations, such as the Rape of Nanking (300,000) the Death Railway (25,000), and the entire campaign of wiping out the ‘inferior races’ (10 million total).

There are voices which assert that the bomb should never have been used at all. I cannot associate myself with such ideas. Six years of total war have convinced most people that had the Germans or the Japanese discovered this new weapon, they would have used it upon us to our complete destruction with the utmost alacrity. I am surprised that very worthy people, but people who in most cases had no intention of proceeding to the Japanese front themselves, should adopt the position that rather than throw this bomb, we should have sacrificed a million American, and a quarter of a million British lives in the desperate battles and massacres of an invasion of Japan.

Most Americans think of Pearl Harbor as a uniquely American event, not realizing that it was simply the opening salvo the Japanese fired in their generalized war to gain total ascendancy in the Pacific. While Pearl Harbor devastated the American navy, the Japanese did not conquer American soil. Residents in the Philippines (American territory), Indonesia (Dutch territory), Malaya (British territory), and Singapore (also British) were not so lucky. Each of those islands fell completely to the Japanese, and the civilians on those islands found themselves prisoners of war.

The men were subjected to brutal slave labor, and had an attrition rate much higher than the women did. Also, with the typical Bushido disrespect for men who didn’t have the decency to kill themselves, rather than to surrender, the men were tortured at a rather consistent rate.

They were periodically subjected to group punishments. The one that lives in my mother’s memory more than sixty years after the fact was the requirement that they stand in the camp compound, in the sun, for 24 hours. No food, no water, no shade, no sitting down, no restroom breaks (and many of the women were liquid with dysentery and other intestinal diseases and parasitical problems). For 24 hours, they’d just stand there, in the humid, 90+ degree temperature, under the blazing tropical sun. The older women, the children and the sick died where they stood.

Of course, the main problem with camp was the deprivation and disease. Rations that started out slender were practically nonexistent by war’s end. Eventually, the women in the camp were competing with the pigs for food. If the women couldn’t supplement their rations with pig slop, all they got was a thin fish broth with a single bite sized piece of meat and some rice floating in it. The women were also given the equivalent of a spoonful of sugar per week. My mother always tried to ration hers but couldn’t do it. Instead, she’d gobble it instantly, and live with the guilt of her lack of self-control.

By war’s end, my mother, who was then 5’2″, weighed 65 pounds. What frightened her at the beginning of August 1945 wasn’t the hunger, but the fact that she no longer felt hungry. She knew that when a women stopped wanting to eat, she had started to die. Had the atomic bomb not dropped when it did, my mother would have starved to death.

Every day that the brutal Japanese bushido masters ruled, would have meant more torture and murder.

Thus IMHO, the atomic bombs were the lesser of evils and even justified to be used to quickly end the war.

Hadley said recently that those for whom the use of the A-bomb was “wrong” seem to be (Page 15) implying “that it would have been better to allow thousands on thousands of American and Japanese infantrymen to die in honest hand-to-hand combat on the beaches than to drop those two bombs.” People holding such views, he notes, “do not come from the ranks of society that produce infantrymen or pilots.”

Tens of thousands of Americans had already died in taking the Pacific islands as a way to get close enough to bomb Japan. On March 9-10, 1945, B-29 bombers dropped an estimated 1,665 tons of napalm on Tokyo, causing at least as many deaths as later at Hiroshima. Over the next three months, American attacks leveled huge swaths of urban Japan. U.S. planes dropped about 60 million leaflets on Japanese cities, telling citizens to evacuate and to call upon their leaders to cease the war. Japan still refused to surrender and upped its resistance with thousands of Kamikaze airstrikes. By the time of the atomic bombings, the U.S. Air Force was planning to transfer from Europe much of the idle British and American bombing fleet to join the B-29s in the Pacific. Perhaps 5,000 Allied bombers would have saturated Japan with napalm. The atomic bombings prevented such a nightmarish incendiary storm.

The Soviet Union, which signed a non-aggression pact with Japan in 1941, had opportunistically attacked Japan on the very day of the Nagasaki bombing. By cutting short the Soviet invasion, the bombings saved not only millions more lives, but kept the Soviets out of postwar Japan, which otherwise might have experienced a catastrophe similar to the subsequent Korean War.

Prince Caspian Movie Review (No Spoilers)

Just watched The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

It’s a good watch, with plenty of action and humour. Lots of fighting, more than the first film, including one on one dules and mass battles with strategy.

The film version changes some plot points and adds a lot to the original novel, while keeping to the main plot and including the memorable dialogue that I recall from C.S. Lewis’ classic.

And again, there’s a bit of Christian thought and worldview woven into the story.

All in all, definitely worth not missing – to the point of holding in pee until the end of the show and then going for 111 seconds and a bit after too.

CatCat or Sometimes Miaow

This is CatCat, or sometimes, Miaow.

It’s a very manja, human-loving cat. And very fluffy.

It’s a stray that wanders around my Ipoh house, but as I said it’s very friendly with humans.

In fact, it actively seeks out human companionship. My dad will put out dry cat food for it when it comes and meows in its high-pitched, very cham and te voice, but it won’t eat till it is pet a bit.

Yes, my dad and mum actually like this cat. It’s quite amazing because they haven’t liked cats before, especially strays.

But this cat is so persistent and unafraid of people, and pretty looking, that it’s wormed its way into their hearts. It started off the friendship by leaving a present of a dead shrew on the doorstep.

Yesterday, when CatCat didn’t show up, my dad actually wondered where it could be and if it was all right. But it was just off on its adventures in the neighborhood, where other families must feed it or it gets food some other way.

It all started when I met this stray cat walking past the house gate as I came home at night, during the Election 2008 time. It was wary of me, but when I crouched down and opened my hand out to it, it came to be petted.

The next night, it apparently sat on the car I had driven waiting for me. Well, at first my dad shooed it away. But it kept on coming back.

It would sit in the driveway and wait for my parents to come home to greet them. Soon enough, CatCat or sometimes Miaow (as it got named) would get an occasional pet, then later chicken scraps, and now regular catfood.

CatCat isn’t allowed in the house at all… Or wasn’t. It used to be, it was sternly kept out of the house, with a little boot to the rear and the wooden door closed behind it.

Now it gets in as far as the hall, sits down, and when no one is looking quickly sneaks off to the dining room and kitchen to explore and hide.

Once, it ran upstairs, to the room, and onto the balcony when it was told to get out. So my dad locked it out on the 2nd storey balcony for the night. The next morning, he opened the door to the room and CatCat came out and went downstairs. Lesson learnt (for now).

Pedra Branca / Pulau Batu Puteh Goes to Singapore

Decision resolves 28-year-old dispute

The 28-year dispute over the ownership Pulau Batu Puteh is over with the International Court of Justice awarding it to Singapore.

However, the court in The Hague awarded Malaysia the ownership of Middle Rocks, a group of rocks located 0.6 nautical miles (1.1km) south of Pulau Batu Puteh, or Pedra Branca as it is known in Singapore.

The ICJ did not determine the ownership of South Ledge, a smaller group of rocks 2.1 nautical miles (3.8km) south of Pulau Batu Puteh, stating that its sovereignty would depend on whose territorial waters it was located in.

Case acting president and ICJ vice-president Judge Awn Shawkat AlKhasawneh delivered the decision, which is binding and not subject to appeal.

Failure to show ownership over Pulau Batu Puteh, maps that indicated Singapore’s sovereignty over the island, and a reply from a Johor state official saying that the state did not have sovereignty over the island were some of the reasons why Malaysia lost its case.

International Court of Justice case acting president Judge Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh, when delivering the court’s decision in The Hague yesterday, said Johor initially had sovereignty over the island.

However, Johor and subsequently Malaysia lost its ownership to Singapore because of those reasons.

Anyone thinks that the judges’ decision was unofficially influenced a bit by the fake-tography on the fake-o-bloggy thing?

School uniform sexy, says group

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian group condemned the uniform worn by girls at government schools, saying it encouraged rape and pre-marital sex.

“The white blouse is too transparent for girls and it becomes a source of attraction,” National Islamic Students Association of Malaysia vice-president Munirah Bahari said in a statement.

“It becomes a distraction to men, who are drawn to it, whether or not they like looking at it,” she said, calling for a review of uniform policy so that it did not violate Islamic ideals.

In multicultural Malaysia, home to majority-Muslim Malays as well as ethnic Chinese and Indians, female students at government schools have a choice of wearing a white blouse with a knee-length skirt or pinafore.

They may also wear a “baju kurung” and a headscarf is optional for Malay students.

Munirah said that “covering up” according to Islamic precepts was important to fend off social ills, including “rape, sexual harassment and even premarital sex.”

“This leads to babies born out of wedlock and, to an extent, even prostitution,” she said.

“Decent clothes which are not revealing can prevent and protect women from any untoward situations,” she said, suggesting that girls wear a blouse of a different colour or with an undergarment.

However, the girls themselves also came in for criticism, with the association saying that some used the white blouse to lure men.

“This is the source of the problem, where we can see that schoolgirls themselves are capable of using this to attract men to them,” Munirah said.

“This could see them getting molested, having premarital sex and all sorts of things.” – AFP

Burglar rapes 73-year-old at her home

KUALA TERENGGANU: A 73-year-old woman was raped by a burglar at her home in Kampung Ging Batu Limau Nipis, Setiu.  

She was washing dishes on Saturday when the burglar entered her house and demanded cash and jewelleries but became angry when the old woman tried to defend herself. 

He then threw her on the floor and raped her.

You want my honest opinion? There are three best ways to protect girls and women from sexual (and non-sexual) predators.

1) Educate our men to be honourable and responsible. Telling them that it’s the girl’s fault for being pretty and that men cannot control their lust is NOT helping!

2) Increase the severity punishment for rape and other crimes. I mean, come one – just physically castrate that second-time offender already! We do that to our other animals every day!

3) Teach girls to be strong, self-respecting and streetwise (this doesn’t mean aggressive and rude, however). The best protection for a woman isn’t a veil on her face or a condom in her purse – it’s a handgun in her holster:

Global Warming Reduces Tornadoes and Hurricanes

In wake of the devastating cyclone in Burma which just left 80,000 dead, the global warming punters were quick to make the declaration:

Using tragedy to advance an agenda has been a strategy for many global warming activists, and it was just a matter of time before someone found a way to tie the recent Myanmar cyclone to global warming.

Former Vice President Al Gore in an interview on NPR’s May 6 “Fresh Air” broadcast did just that. He was interviewed by “Fresh Air” host Terry Gross about the release of his book, “The Assault on Reason,” in paperback.

“And as we’re talking today, Terry, the death count in Myanmar from the cyclone that hit there yesterday has been rising from 15,000 to way on up there to much higher numbers now being speculated,” Gore said. “And last year a catastrophic storm from last fall hit Bangladesh. The year before, the strongest cyclone in more than 50 years hit China – and we’re seeing consequences that scientists have long predicted might be associated with continued global warming.”

Gore claimed global warming is forcing ocean temperatures to rise, which is causing storms, including cyclones and hurricanes, to intensify.

Apparently, Gore and his cronies have not been reading the science (or have been intentionally ignoring it), which is nothing new to them.

Global Warming Reduces Tornadoes

In a recent story on global warming, ABC claimed that tornado frequency this year is running nearly twice that of last year and that this can be linked to global warming.

The only problem is that the first five months of 2008 have been the coolest since 1993 and has run well below the average temperature for the period from 1978-1990.

In fact, average US temperatures were about a degree Celsius cooler in 2008 than in 2007.

UAH MSU temperature for USA (average anomaly):

Jan-May 2007: 0.668 C

Jan-Apr 2008: -0.228 C

Difference: 0.896 C cooler

Therefore, global warming reduces tornadoes and is a good thing!

Global Warming Doesn’t Cause Hurricanes

Global warming isn’t to blame for the recent jump in hurricanes in the Atlantic, concludes a study by a prominent federal scientist whose position has shifted on the subject.

Not only that, warmer temperatures will actually reduce the number of hurricanes in the Atlantic and those making landfall, research meteorologist Tom Knutson reported in a study released Sunday.

Therefore, global warming reduces hurricanes and is a good thing!

If only Al Gore weren’t campaigning with his hot air and carbon-emitting private jet/mansion/mega-concert, global warming could have saved tens of thousands of lives from freak weather!

You’re a liar and a murderer,  Al Gore!
