Woman Has Baby With Her Grandson – Liberals, Is This Morally Wrong?

April 30, 10

Via Ace of Spades HQ, from New Idea:

What makes Pearl’s decision to become a mum again even more shocking is that her new boyfriend is her biological grandson, 26-year-old Phil Bailey.

Twelve months ago, Phil made the shocking admission that he wanted a child. Pearl told him she was desperate for a baby as well, but it was one wish that she couldn’t fulfil as she’d already gone through menopause.

The determined pair then decided to use Pearl’s retirement money to find a surrogate mother and buy a donor egg to inseminate with Phil’s sperm. They placed an ad asking for an open-minded surrogate, and Roxanne Campbell applied. The three met up a few times and hit it off.

So the baby is not genetically related to her (directly), just to him. No chance of inbreeding of genes here, nosiree.

So, liberals… Is this morally wrong and gross-out, if they had never met before this there is no chance of genetic problems caused by the close familial relationship? Think carefully about same-sex rights and They’re two consenting adults who love one another so what’s wrong with that before you answer… You fundie bigot.

Global Warming is Literally Based on Flat Earth Theory

April 30, 10

Lol!

Basically, global warming theories assume that every part of the planet receives the same amount of solar radiation at the same angle, and that the Sun is always shining onto the planet’s surface (no allocation for night).

In other words, they assume that the Earth is flat with the Sun hanging directly overhead all the time. Flat Earth.

This makes it easier (e.g. no longer impossible) to apply their calculations and estimate the impact that so-and-so amount of greenhouse gas will have on global temperatures (which, again, are not uniform in reality).

Without assuming a flat Earth, with their current capabilities scientists simply cannot source and interpret all the data that is needed to make a reasonably accurate prediction.

Via Ace of Spades HQ, from Don Surber:

The attached graph is in all of the Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change, and it is fundamental to all their activities. It assumes that the earth can be considered to be flat, that the sun shines all day and all night with equal intensity, and that the temperature of the earth’s surface is constant.

The total energy entering is made equal to the energy leaving. In this way it is now possible to calculate the effect of additional greenhouse gases. If it was not “balanced” and the balance varied it would be impossible to calculate.what are the effects of additional greenhouse gases.

It ought to be obvious. The earth does actually rotate. The sun does not shine at night. The temperature is not constant. Every part of the earth has a different energy input from its output.

There is a correct mathematical treatment. It would involve the division of the earth’s surface into a large number of tiny increments, and the energy input and output calculated for each one, using the changes in all the factors involved. There would then have to be a gigantic integration of all these results to give a complete energy budget for the earth. Only when this is done and repeated over a long period will it be possible to find the influence of increases in greenhouse gases.

Malaysian Teachers Have Few Saturdays Off

April 27, 10

Related to my letter from earlier, from The Star Opinion 27 April 2010:

There goes teachers’ off days on Saturdays

THE Government’s decision to implement five working days in a week was well received by civil servants in the country. The ultimate aim was to forge a closer family relationship in line with the Government’s initiative of creating a caring society.

The Public Service Department issued a circular on July 1, 2005 to all the ministries under its jurisdiction on this and teachers, who are part and parcel of the civil service, were also covered by it.

However, the Education director-general (D-G) in another circular dated July 20, 2005, appealed to teachers to carry out activities on Saturdays on a voluntary basis. This was done after taking into consideration programmes that had already been planned at the beginning of the year and also other mitigating factors. Teachers followed the appeal whole- heartedly, thinking that it was only a short-term hiccup.

However, this was not the case. Teachers are now being called on to carry out activities nearly every Saturday without fail, citing the D-G’s directive. The incredulous argument is that the NUTP has given its blessing and so teachers have no excuse, but to follow.

The introduction of j-QAF teachers in primary schools has created an additional burden to classroom teachers. The j-QAF teachers have to carry out a programme called Kem Bestari Solat four times in a year on a Saturday for each standard. If there are six, then the programme has to be carried out 24 Saturdays a year. The task is not only handled by the j-QAF teachers but normal classroom teachers are also compelled to help out.

Teachers have also to be in school on the second and fourth Saturdays to assist in co-curricular activities. They have got to attend in-service training at least seven times in a year, usually held on Saturdays.

In addition, teachers are expected to be in school on Saturdays on Sports Day, Prize Giving Day, PTA AGM and for other activities. In a nut shell, teachers have to sacrifice all their Saturdays because of some overzealous principals and, district and state education officials.

But the irony is that these officers have their Saturdays off with their families. The school principals get their Saturday breaks too.

Women make up a large percentage of teachers in schools. Most are young and have just started their own families. They have children and their salaries aren’t enough to hire maids. They rely on baby-sitters or nurseries.

Even then, these facilities are not available on Saturdays and they have to fend for themselves.

If the Government is true to its slogan of “People First”, it should find an amicable solution to the plight of these teachers.

We are also citizens of this country. Do not let them, be a disillusioned lot. We appeal to the Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to help solve the woes of the teachers.

We have strong faith and high hopes that this matter will be resolved soon.

TEACHER RIGHTS,

Klang.

And yes, topically can be used in that sense.

Shotgunning Grandpa Protects Home From Four Robbers

April 27, 10

Second Amendment for Malaysia!

From The Star 27 April 2010:

Plucky Rela captain opens fire on robbers, hitting two of them
By MARTIN CARVALHO

ALOR GAJAH: A feisty 60-year-old grandfather foiled a gang robbery at his home early yesterday morning by opening fire on two of the knife-wielding intruders.

It was about 5am when four robbers broke into E Lai Choon’s double-storey bungalow in a well-known resort town off the PLUS North-South Expressway.

“I was awakened by a loud banging sound and the cries of my 30-month-old grandson coming from the room on the first floor where my 30-year-old son and his wife were sleeping.

No escape: Rescue 911 personnel treating the robber’s gunshot wounds next to the highway after he was nabbed by police yesterday.

“I suspected something amiss. I peeked out through the door and saw two masked figures standing outside my son’s room,” he said, adding that the robbers had armed themselves with knives taken from his kitchen.

A Rela captain and platoon leader, E grabbed his shotgun from under his bed and told his 53-year-old wife to remain silent.

“I loaded my gun with four rounds and I caught them by surprise when I discharged all four rounds towards them at once,” he said, adding that he managed to hit two of them.

Overcome by panic, he said their accomplices literally shoved the two injured robbers out of the back room window to escape.

E, who alerted the Simpang Ampat police station nearby, said the robbers escaped on foot and headed for the highway about 300m away.

“I am thankful my family was unharmed. The robbers had tied my son and daughter-in-law with wire and television cords and threatened to kill them if they resisted,” he added.

Malacca police chief Senior Asst Comm (I) Datuk Mohd Rodwan Mohd Yusof said one of the injured robbers, an East Javanese in his 30s, was nabbed about 250m from the highway following a police hunt.
Platoon leader E.

“We believe four of them were supposed to rob the family and then make off with another accomplice in a get-away car parked next to the highway.

However, two of them escaped in the car, leaving three of their accomplices behind, he said at the scene.

Based on initial investigations, he said the gang comprised foreigners and were nicked-named Gang Subuh (Dawn Gang), owing to their preferred time for robbing.

He said over 60 police personnel and five tracker dogs scoured the area next to the highway for the remaining two robbers, one of whom is believed to have been shot in the arm.

“We have alerted police in neighbouring states including Pahang to keep a look-out for the gang.

“We have also notified hospitals and clinics to alert us if they get patients seeking treatment for gunshot wounds, he said.

He commended E for his bravery, adding that the grandfather had acted within his rights when defending his family and property.

Wish I had a personal firearm to use on knifey robbers back then too!

Virginia Passes Sensible Abortion Restrictions Law

April 23, 10

Via Moonbattery, from The Washington Post:

On a 20 to 19 vote, the Democratic-led Senate agreed to an amendment proposed by [Gov. Robert F.] McDonnell (R) that would limit state funding for abortions to those performed in cases of rape or incest or when the life of the mother is at risk. Nothing in state law previously prohibited Medicaid-funded abortions in instances when the health of the mother was in jeopardy.

Sensible in that this is the actual anti-abortion position taken by most pro-lifers, rather than the straw-man set up by pro-deathers that is ‘underage raped-by-own-family victims in critical condition will have to resort to back alley black market abortionists or wire hangers – thanks to evil, evil Sarah Palin!’.

Also sensible in that it puts actual restrictions on the current post-Roe v. Wade environment where ‘health of the mother’ is loosely interpreted to include emotional health – meaning that a woman can abort her baby because she feels unhappy that the baby is unplanned, that she will have more responsibilities now, that the baby’s dad is a deadbeat no-show (if she even knows which guy got her pregnant) – whatever you wanna say, gal!

Malaysian Prof Blames Non-Existant Global Warming For Flowers Losing Smell

April 22, 10

Via Moonbattery, from asiaone news (and also in NST 21 March 2010):

Flowers losing scent due to climate change

KUALA LUMPUR: A rose may stop smelling like a rose.

This is the concern of environmentalists as flowers are losing their scent due to climate change and air pollution. And their fragrance may be lost forever.

Science and Technology Professor Emeritus at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Dr Abdul Latif Mohamad, said genetically modified flowers might be the way out.

Climate change is also the reason Kuala Lumpur City Hall is increasingly turning to shady trees, because flowers which previously formed the centrepiece of its beautification programme have been wilting fast.

Datuk Bandar Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail said City Hall used to spend RM1.5 million ($635,100) a month to plant and maintain flowers in the city, but the contractor’s services were terminated in March last year.

City Hall has taken over the planting, opting for bou-gainvillea and the tropical shrubs, Ixora, for their durability and cheaper cost.

Under the previous arrangement, some of the small flowers cost RM3.50 per seedling.

“It was getting too costly to beautify the city. Flowers were dying fast,” he said, adding that City Hall would continue to plant shady trees more suited for soaking up the increasing pollution and coping with global warming.

Latif said UKM might have offered plausible reasons as to why some pollinators were not spreading flower seeds, a pattern caused by the missing “scent trail” with scent tissues burning easily due to global warming.

“The aroma producing chemical compounds in flowers dry up faster now compared with before.”

The only way out, he said, was to genetically modify the flowers so that the effects would not be permanent and the future generation would not be robbed of nature’s beauty.

“The act is almost like producing essential oils. Scientists add on certain chemicals for stronger scent.”

He said scents in flowers last longer in colder climate as plants can hold on to their essential oils longer.

“The flowers may still have strong scents in colder climate. But locally, we fear this might be lost forever.”

With flowers emitting lesser scent, the insects and butterflies are travelling further and longer to get a share of nectar.

Latif said birds and insects were heading towards hilly areas and deeper into the jungles where the weather is cooler.

He related an incident in Sungai Siput, Perak, where the farmers failed to get fruits from their orchards.

Upon investigation, Latif’s team discovered that the flowers were no longer pollinating after dust from a hill blast blocked the growth of stigmas.

He said Malaysians could no longer rely on nature to heal itself without the help of science.

He said Malaysia needed to follow in the footsteps of Japan, Europe, the United States, China and South Korea which have invested millions in the research of genetically modified seeds.

Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) director-general Datuk Dr Abdul Latif Mahmod said recently the extreme weather change might affect the life span of trees as a result of lighter or heavier rain.

“We should look at how trees can be mutated so that they will not be destroyed.”

He said experts, including from FRIM, should look at ways to prolong the lifespan of certain plants.

Meanwhile, Natural Resources and Environment Deputy Minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said given the extreme climate changes, every country should work together and not in isolation.

He said the decline in global biodiversity and ecosystem services urgently called for proactive measures.

“Both policy-makers and researchers need to work hand in hand to strengthen forest genetics, breeding and conservation.”

While I applaud his desire to preserve the beauty and blessings of nature, I feel he needs to keep updated with the latest information – especially in the wake of Climategate and its localized cousins in Darwin, New Zealand, Russia and the USA.

The man at the centre of the original Climategate scandal, Phil Jones, admitted that there has been no statistically significant warming in the past 15 years, even as he was recently forced to step down as the head of the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia.

Scientists at the British Hadley Centre too found no warming from 1999 to 2008. Going back further, a peer reviewed study by three climate researchers published in the Journal of Geophysical Research concluded that none of the warming from 1977 to 1998 was the result of human activity. Instead, the cause was natural variations in the Pacific Ocean that made El Niño conditions more likely.

In fact, data from the University of Alabama in Huntsville found that temperatures actually decreased by 0.39 degrees Celcius from 2001 to 2009. This utter lack of warming might explain why Arctic ice is currently the same as 1979 levels, while Antarctic ice is at the highest levels ever recorded.

Puzzlement has rightly ensued among once-confident climate change scientists, seeing as temperatures have not increased despite continually rising carbon dioxide levels – in contradiction to their theories and allegedly accurate computer models.

So exactly what global warming is Dr Abdul Latif Mohamad blaming for our wilting flowers? It was not so long ago that global warming was even blamed for local problems such the flooding of 2006 and 2007, and smelly mud along Penang’s Gurney Drive. Yep, blame global events out of your direct control for local ineptitude.

I do not blame those whose first impulse is to blame global warming rather than look at local factors. Public perception has been heavily skewed towards climate change alarmism by the powers that be, even as they seek to hush up such major embarrassments as the multiple Climategates, Pachaurigate, Glaciergate (which Pachauri made a bomb off), Mountain Icegate and Amazongate.

I am all for the preservation of the environment and keeping our cities beautiful and liveable. But we really ought base our efforts on sound fact – instead of highly politicized, profiteering-motivated, dishonest junk science – in order to achieve the desired results.

Much, much more on global non-warming at Global Warming Is Unfactual.
